Dodge Ball

Introduction
Dodgeball is a game in which players on two teams try to throw balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves.

The Tournament
  • There will be 2 groups
  • Each team will play everybody in their group once
  • The top 2 teams in each group will play in semi finals. Top team in group1 will play 2nd place team in group 2. Top team in group 2 will play 2nd place team in group 1.
  • The wining team in the final will be named champions of the Dodge Ball event.
  • Teams may use more than 5 players over the tournament.
  • The aim is to win by eliminating all your opponents from the game The winning team is the first team to eliminate all their opponents from the game.
  • Games will last 5 minutes. If at this point no team has been eliminated then the team with the most players on the field of play wins.
  • If both teams have the same number of player remaining the game will go to sudden death until the next player is eliminated.
  • Group positions are based on team points. If at the end of the group games teams are equal on points, then the player difference rule will come into effect. (number of players still remaining on the field at the end of the game). If this does not help then a penalty throw down against a cone will be played.

Registration
Teams must register at Waterside Hotel & Leisure Club Reception at 5:30pm ready for a 6:00pm start.
The Rules
Teams
  • Teams of 5 players.
  • Teams must be of mixed gender and this must be reflected on the field of play at all times.
Playing Area
  • The playing area is across half a tennis court, between the tram lines.
  • The playing area will be marked on the floor.
  • The balls will be placed on the half-way line.
Throwing a Ball
  • If you throw a ball and it hits an opposition player, then they are eliminated (unless an opposition player catches it). Balls must hit an opposition player below head height.
  • If you throw a ball that hits an opposition player and rebounds to hit another player both players are out (multiple hits also work in the same way)
  • The ball can hit the ground first in the opposition half before hitting a player.
  • If a thrown ball bounces in your own half, the ball is deemed as dead and cannot eliminate an opposing player.
  • If a ball goes outside the playing area and rebounds into the court and hits an opposing player they are not eliminated.
Catching/receiving a thrown ball
  • If you catch a thrown ball securely that has remained in the playing area then the player who threw the ball is eliminated and one of your team mates can re-join the game.
  • A catch is control of the ball for 2 seconds, catching the ball between your legs is permitted.
  • After the ball strikes a player then the ball must be caught before it leaves the playing area or hits the ground for the player not to be eliminated.
  • A player must stay in the playing area to catch the ball. If a player is hit then leaves the playing area to catch it they are eliminated.
  • If a player is hit by a ball which rebounds and is caught by a team mate (in play), the player who threw the ball is out.
General rules to be eliminated
  • Players who leave the playing field for any reason accidentally or on purpose.
  • Players who hit an opposition player in the head (a players head height.
  • Players who kick a ball.
  • Players may block a ball with the ball they are holding without being eliminated, but if the ball rebounds to hit a team mate then the team mate is eliminated.
  • Bad sportsmanship, cheating are also reasons to be eliminated from the game.
General Rules
  • Players may block balls thrown at the team with balls they are holding.
  • Players may not hold on to a ball for longer than approximately 30 seconds- this is a self-regulated rule please play in the spirit of the games.
  • There will be 4 balls in play for the duration of each match.
The Game
  • Team consists of 5 players.
  • The referee’s ruling is final.
  • The game starts with the team members behind the base line, the 4 balls per game will be placed on the half way line. Once the game starts players may rush to get the balls to start the game.
  • Games are 5 minutes’ long.
  • Players are asked to play to the rules and self-officiate. The umpire will not always be able to see everything.
  • Umpires are in place to resolve disputes and their decision is final.
  • Common sense must prevail.
Equipment
  • Balls used will be a soft sponge, about the size of a football.
  • Players should be aware that they will be hit by balls during the event.
  • Players should wear clothing suitable for being active.
Scoring
  • 5 points will be awarded to each team for every game they win
  • 10 points will be awarded to both the teams who reach the final
  • 15 points will be awarded to the team who wins the entire event
